rUBY BRIDGES http://www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/rooseveltms/portfolio/cav_blk5/hillary_w/bio.htm SUMMARY : Ruby Bridges was an important African American in history. She was born in Tylertown, Mississippi on September 8, 1954. Since Ruby was an African American her family got looked at weird where ever they went. When she was four years old her and her family moved to New Orleans. In New Orleans, the judge decided that she should be attending Frantz Elementary School for Whites. She made history at the school. Ruby was the first African American to go to this elementary school there. Ruby had horrible experiences when she went to this school. For example, she had to be escorted by Federal Marshalls. White angry mobs would chant “two-four-six-eight, we don’t want to integrate.” The affect of having Ruby in your class is that, the white parents took their kids out of that school. People still thought that blacks were different than whites. Also, that they didn’t have equal rights. Ruby Bridges had a tough time though out her school year. But, Ruby’s teacher was extremely supportive of her. By the third day of school, she was the only one in the classroom with the teacher Mrs. Henry. Ruby’s family had consequences sending their African American child to a white school. Her father lost his job when he sent her. Then, her grandparents lost their place as tenant farmers. The Bridges’s family was threatened multiple times. Ruby and her family were supported by their friends and that helped them a lot. Also, the family had to stick together in tough times like these. IMPORTANT IN HISTORY : Ruby Bridges was an important person apart in history. She did ineradicable things that a lot of people wouldn’t do. She had courage and dedication. She was brave for still going to school even though white parents were screaming at her. Also, she still went to school even though she ended up being the only person in class after the third day. She was dedicated to her family and herself. Many people now will look at her as an amazing person and they will look up to her. She also was an important part of history is because, she made a difference for African Americans. Since Ruby went to an all white school, more and more African American families started to send their kids to school because that showed that boy races were equal. Ruby Bridges was an important part in history.
